Draft water management plan elicits comment

A draft water management plan for the lower Waitaki River and Waimate district has prompted 22 people to comment on the programme.

The Lower Waitaki South Coastal Canterbury Zone Committee's draft Zone Implementation Programme (ZIP) has been produced by a community committee under the auspices of Environment Canterbury and the Waitaki and Waimate District Councils.

It was made public in October and asked people to comment.

The feedback, along with comments from community meetings, will be taken into account as the committee prepares the final draft. It is due to go to Environment Canterbury commissioners, the Waitaki and Waimate District Councils early next year for their approval.

The draft programme includes 60 recommendations on five key priority areas, including biodiversity, Waitaki catchment water allocation regional plan, drinking water, flows, lowland streams and water quality, Hakataramea River and the Wainono Lagoon.

The programme will be reviewed periodically by the committee to incorporate changes in water and how to manage it.
