Contractors carefully work around lime trees in Oamaru's Reed St to fulfil a road works contract for the Waitaki District Council.

The kerb and channel replacement along the street was no ordinary task, the council's roading manager, Michael Voss, said this week.

The street is lined with protected lime trees and special care is required not to damage them while the work is being done.

A resource consent with special conditions was required for work within 5m of the trees, specifically during the excavation, to protect tree roots.

''A HydroVac [machine] is being used to remove soils from around the trees, with an arborist monitoring the site to ensure all possible precautions are taken,'' Mr Voss said.

Once the work had been completed, the line of the kerb would, where it could, curve behind the trees, and a permeable surface would be established between the tree and the kerb, to allow the roots access to air and water.
