It has taken nearly 50 years, but a woman has finally beaten the blokes in the Kelly's Canter race at Palmerston.

Sabrina Grogan, of Timaru, yesterday became first woman to win the annual race, now in its 49th year, as she recorded 25min 19sec.

She was more than a minute ahead of the first man home, Nicholas Cruden, of Dunedin, in 26min 20sec.

Women had previously finished among the first half dozen runners to complete the course.

Entry numbers were up from 55 last year to 70 this year, Palmerston Lions club spokeswoman Eileen Birtwhistle said.

There was a good age range from people in their mid-70s down to primary school age-groups.

Grogan and Cruden received prizes of $300 each from Palmerston Booksellers Good Keen Kiwi Books.
