Haul of stolen gear recovered

Thousands of dollars worth of stolen property have been recovered following the execution of three search warrants in North Otago.

Oamaru police, assisted by the Dunedin Armed Offenders Squad, visited two Hampden properties and another in Waianakarua early on Wednesday morning, recovering property from one residence in each town.

The haul included a 1000-litre fuel container and a high-speed electric pump, five firearms, chainsaws, a welder, sprayers, tools, and a John Deere ride-on lawnmower, as well as a range of farm-related property.

A 43-year-old Hampden man appeared in the Dunedin District Court on Thursday and was remanded on bail until December 15, when he will reappear in Dunedin on two charges each of receiving stolen goods and burglary.

A 37-year-old Waianakarua man will appear in the Timaru District Court on December 22 on two charges each of burglary and receiving stolen goods, and one charge each of theft and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Detective Sergeant Dan Keno, of Oamaru, wished to thank the public for their assistance.

"Oamaru police are still keen to hear from people who live in rural North Otago who believe they may have had items stolen from their properties," he said.

People with information could contact Oamaru police or call the police anonymously on the Crime Stoppers phone line, 0800 555-111.
