Hope warmer pool will attract more swimmers

Getting into warm water has just become easier in Palmerston.

The community swimming pool at East Otago High School now has plenty of warm water with the addition of a new $50,000 heat pump.

The 100kW heat pump was installed recently to boost the warmth of the community pool and, hopefully, the numbers of swimmers using it.

The pool's temperature had risen to a steady 29degC, East Otago High School principal Rick Geerlofs said.

He is hoped the number of swimmers using the pool out of school hours would increase with the warmer water temperature.

More swimmers are needed for the pool to operate "in the black".

The cost of the new heat pump was largely covered from reserves, secretary-treasurer of the East Otago community swimming pool Virginia Powell, of Palmerston, said recently.

However, the pool had a deficit of $5000 in running costs last year.

More key-holder families were needed to cover the deficit, she said.

Pool keys can be obtained from the East Otago High School office and the Waihemo Centre, the Waitaki District Council office in Palmerston.

The cost is $150 for family keys and $100 for single keys.
