Police are investigating after jewellery likely valued at thousands of dollars was taken in an alleged smash-and-grab at an Oamaru business this morning.

Senior Sergeant Jason McCoy, of Oamaru, said the front window of Ballantynes Showcase Jewellers in lower Thames St was smashed about 1.20am and several pieces of Meadowlark brand jewellery taken.

Police were at the scene talking to staff this morning, and a forensic examination will also be carried out.

Snr Sgt McCoy said it was not known at this stage how many people were involved in the brazen theft, but were following up on information received from the public.

Inquiries are continuing.
