Waitaki District manager libraries and archive Philip van Zijl stands in thelibrary at Palmerston with staff members (from left) Waihemo Centre manager Barbara Taylor, Waitaki community librarian Jean Rivett, of Oamaru, and Waitaki District Council customer contact team manager Pam Hicks.

The library's 6000 books were recently returned to the new design library after being put into storage during the upgrade. Alcove workplaces, complete with USB plugs and IT equipment, have been added for users, including tourists.

Mr van Zijl said the only other South Island library that had undertaken a similar layout change was the Kaiapoi library in the Waimakariri District.

The Waihemo Centre and the Palmerston library were open, although it would be about a fortnight before installation of all the new furniture and equipment was completed.

Our journalists are your neighbours

We are the South's eyes and ears in crucial council meetings, at court hearings, on the sidelines of sporting events and on the frontline of breaking news.

As our region faces uncharted waters in the wake of a global pandemic, Otago Daily Times continues to bring you local stories that matter.

We employ local journalists and photographers to tell your stories, as other outlets cut local coverage in favour of stories told out of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

You can help us continue to bring you local news you can trust by becoming a supporter.
