The Waitaki District Council placed a street sign blade on the wrong road, a mix-up that occurred while replacing a stolen sign in Oamaru’s Doon St.

Council roading manager Mike Harrison said South Roads Limited replaced the sign on Thursday because it had "grown legs and walked".

A resident in the area told the Otago Daily Times the Doon St sign was placed on the wrong street. Instead of its rightful place in the eastern end of College St, it was placed in an unnamed street that functioned as a shared driveway for council-owned units.

SouthRoads would revisit the street to make sure the sign blades were in their corresponding roads, Mr Harrison said.

"It does sound like there is a very enthusiastic member of our community that’s trying to decorate the town," he said.
