A commercial truck driver has been charged with careless driving causing the death of young dairy farm worker Tom Fry at Richmond last month.

The 35-year-old Timaru man, arrested in Oamaru yesterday afternoon, has also been charged with attempting to obstruct the course of justice by lying about the cause of damage to his truck and lying about whether or not he drove through the intersection of York St and State Highway 1; failing to stop and ascertain injury after a crash; and failing to report a crash.

The man, who has interim name suppression, appeared before the registrar in the Oamaru District Court and was remanded without plea to reappear on July 7.

Mr Fry (18), who was riding his Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle to work at a Morven dairy farm on May 13, was killed just north of Pukeuri about 3.50am.

Yesterday, Detective Sergeant Mike Ryder said the assistance of the public and the commercial trucking industry in the investigation had been much appreciated.

Det Sgt Ryder said it had been a long and meticulous investigation and police were pleased to have advanced it to this point. He could not comment further on the circumstances as the matter was now before the court.

"It is now a case of simply letting the judicial system take its course," he said.

The Fry family had been informed of the arrest. They were coming to terms with the development and did not want to comment at this stage, he said.

An Invercargill man, Cam Paul Kennedy (25), was arrested on May 19 and charged with failing to stop after a crash to render assistance, failing to report a crash and perverting the course of justice by removing all identification from, and burning, a vehicle.

That followed the discovery of a burnt-out Nissan Skyline car 15km from the spot where Mr Fry was found.

At that time, police said they could not discount that there were other people or vehicles involved, or that there might be further arrests or charges in relation to the crash. Kennedy is due to appear again in court next month.
