Man remanded in custody on threatening to kill count

A man, who was stopped by police yesterday and had a loaded firearm on the car seat beside him, has been remanded in custody to appear in the Oamaru District Court on Wednesday.

The 50-year-old Oamaru man faces charges of threatening to kill, drink-driving (third or subsequent), unlawfully possessing a firearm and being intoxicated while in possession of a firearm.

Police investigations were continuing and other charges were possible, Sergeant Tony Woodbridge said.

Police were called to a house in north Oamaru early yesterday in relation to a domestic incident.

Officers stopped a car which they saw leaving the property. The loaded firearm was on the seat beside the male driver.

Serious threats had allegedly been made to people at the address. The man was arrested without incident, Sgt Woodbridge said.

• Police are warning people, particularly the elderly, about a man purporting to be a chimney sweep in Oamaru.

Yesterday, Senior Constable Bruce Dow said the man was a "con man". He demanded a $50 cash cheque from an elderly woman yesterday after taking a vacuum cleaner into a house.

He was described as being in his 50s and was accompanied by a woman in her late 40s. They were travelling in a pale brown station wagon.
