Man rescued from swamped jet-boat

A Timaru man was rescued when his jet-boat filled with water at the Waitaki River mouth yesterday afternoon.

The man, who did not want to be interviewed by the Otago Daily Times, was fishing for salmon at the mouth when he lost power in his 4m boat between 3.30pm and 4pm.

When he tried to raise the anchor, it snagged, and waves engulfed his boat.

He was rescued by another jet-boat and taken back to the boat launch ramp below the SH1 bridge.

He was not injured.

The abandoned jet-boat late yesterday had been swept out through the mouth to the sea beyond the bar and may have to be abandoned.
