McCaw offered 'freedom'

All Black captain Richie McCaw has been offered the freedom of the Waitaki district by the Waitaki District Council after the team's victory in the Rugby World Cup.

However, what exactly that means has yet to be decided.

Waitaki Mayor Alex Familton at the council's meeting on Tuesday moved the people of the district congratulate McCaw and the All Blacks "as deserved world champions" and invite McCaw to accept the freedom of the district.

While councillors unanimously approved that, some did ask what that meant.

The decision is in recognition of McCaw's association with the district. He was born in Oamaru Hospital on December 31, 1980, was raised in the Hakataramea Valley in the Waimate district but was educated and played his first rugby in Kurow.

Mr Familton has written to McCaw on behalf of the council and district congratulating him, the team, Graham Henry and the coaches, and "all those who were close to the action on winning all matches played [in the Rugby World Cup]".
