Two women with almost 90 years of service between them to the North Otago Floral Art Club have been awarded life membership in the organisation.

Both Marion Partridge and Joy Evans have considerably more involvement with floral art than that, but both became members of the North Otago club in the 1970s.

Awarding the life memberships, club president Jan Wheeler said both had made a great contribution through their leadership, dedication, service and commitment over the years.

''They have been loyal and innovative members of the club, as well as at a regional and national level,'' the club said.

One of the highlights for Mrs Evans was helping with the North Otago Club exhibit for the Auckland Floral Art Conference in the 1970s, an ''amazing experience'' to be part of, designing a large exhibit which was transported to Auckland and staged there.

She went on to help design and create the North Otago exhibit at Wellington Floral Art Society of NZ World Show with an Oamaru Limestone theme, the Christchurch Cricket Green theme, and many more club designs in New Zealand over the years.

Mrs Evans and Mrs Partridge attended the Floral Art World Show and Conference in 1999 at Durban, South Africa, and Mrs Evans' design was highly commended.

Mrs Evans was treasurer of the club for six terms, secretary three to four terms, president two to three terms and on the committee for 40 years, up until this year.

Mrs Partridge started floral art in Timaru 50 years ago, before coming to North Otago in the 1970s.

She has always been on the committee of all the floral art clubs she has belonged to.

In North Otago, she has been secretary two to three terms, president two to three terms and on the committee for 40 years.

She has exhibited in and won many North Otago and South Canterbury area designer-of-the-year competitions with her creative designs.

Participating, creating and staging the North Otago designs at many New Zealand competitions over the years, Mrs Partridge has won many prizes with her innovative floral designs.

She has also exhibited at world floral art shows and conferences in Wellington, Glasgow, Durban and, this year, Dublin.

A great highlight for Mrs Partridge was winning a gold medal at Durban in South Africa in 1999, for her floral design.

In Oamaru, she taught floral art classes at the Waitaki Boys' High School as part of the adult education programme.
