N. Otago YFC organising sale as fundraiser

North Otago Young Farmers Club is asking farmers to donate stock to be sold at a special sale to help raise funds for the Christchurch earthquake recovery.

The gift lamb/calf/ewe sale will be part of the stock sale at the Waiareka sale yards, Weston, from 10am on Monday.

North Otago Young Farmers spokeswoman Alison Thompson said because its members did not live as close to Christchurch as others, it was harder for them to provide practical assistance in the earthquake area, but they had wanted to help in some way.

"Many of our members have friends and family in the Christchurch area and we have all seen the devastation of the area in the media.

"We decided we should do something to help," she said.

The idea for the sale came out of meeting of the district's clubs on Monday night.

The group aimed to contact as many farmers as possible and gather as much stock as time allowed.

Livestock agents and trucking firms had been contacted and were co-ordinating some aspects and eliminating costs so all proceeds could go to the relief fund.

All stock must have an animal status declaration form and farmers had to note on the form that the stock was a donation for the YFC Earthquake Appeal so it ended up in the right pen.

Stock should be dropped off at the saleyards on Sunday, between 1.30pm and 6pm.

Young Farmers groups in outlying areas would be co-ordinating drop-off points around the district so stock could be trucked to the sale.

They might be able to pick up stock from individual farmers, Mrs Thompson said.

She urged buyers to support the cause.
