Pressure points and bedsores will be a thing of the past at Oamaru Hospital with the acquisition of three new gel mattresses.

The German-made mat-tresses, valued at $3500 each, were presented this week by service club representatives to nursing co-ordinator Dawn Kidd.

When a member of the Waiareka Valley Lions Club spent time as a patient in the hospital, it became apparent the hospital could make good use of more than its two gel mattresses.

Waiareka Valley Lions Club president Bob Kingan and North Otago Lions Club president Judith Isbister took the project to the other Lions Clubs in North Otago, along with the Oamaru Altrusa Club.

The clubs contributed more than $8000 to the project, leaving a shortfall of just over $2000, which was covered by the Otago Service Clubs Medical Trust.

Mrs Kidd said the mattresses were a "godsend" and she felt humbled by the support in the community for the hospital.
