Rubbish dumped near lookout

A considerable quantity of rubbish has been dumped on and over a cliff face about 75m from the Moeraki lookout reserve car park.

A complaint has been made to the Waitaki District Council. The green waste and some of the rubbish is visible from the reserve car park

The dumping, in several loads, has been condemned by Waihemo Community Board Deputy chairman Rod Philip. A fire was also lit on the reserve.

"You'd think that those days [of dumping rubbish] are gone,'' an indignant Mr Philip said at the Moeraki reserve on Thursday as he and Waihemo Community Board member Ken Wheeler, of Hillgrove, inspected the mess.

The rubbish included a mattress, fencing, old roofing iron and drain pipes, as well as green waste.

There were fresh vehicle tracks from the road to the lookout leading to the area where the rubbish and green waste was strewn on the ground, Mr Philip said.

The Waitaki District Council had been advised the rubbish was dumped from a ute, which had driven on to the reserve.

The undientified person who complained did not want to be involved further, acting regulatory services manager Paul Arnold said in a report to the Waihemo Community Board meeting to be held at Palmerston on Monday.

It should be possible to track down the people repsonsible for dumping the rubbish, Mr Philip said.

It would be the council officer's job to contact the police, he said.

A line of bollards or rocks could be placed by the reserve entrance, where it runs next to the road leading to the Moeraki monument, the Waitaki District Council Property and Parks department has suggested in a report to the Waihemo Community Board.

A paddock to the south of the reserve had also been subject to dumping. A lock would be provided to the gate for this reserve. The key would be held by the person who held the grazing licence for the area.

'No dumping'' signs would also be put up.
