Search continues for missing fisherman in Waitaki River

Police are continuing to search for a missing fisherman near the Waitaki River mouth.

Senior Sergeant Antony Callon said police were notified a fisherman was overdue from a day fishing trip on the lower Waitaki River at about 7pm last night.

A search was conducted overnight with teams from the Otago Rescue Helicopter, North Otago LandSAR, South Canterbury Coastguard and Aoraki Police Search and Rescue staff.

"Crews were called to assist police with the search for a missing person on the Waitaki River at around 11 to 11.30pm and were out searching all night," a South Canterbury Coastguard spokesperson told the New Zealand Herald

Police have thanked everyone involved and those still assisting with the search.

"We would also like to offer our support to whanau and friends of the missing fisherman," Snr Sgt Callon said.
