A recent ''small pattern of burglaries'' around Oamaru has prompted a warning from police, who are urging the public to make sure their cars and homes are secure, especially during holidays.
The most recent report concerned the burglary of a Bedford St house between 6pm on Friday and 4.40pm on Sunday.
Acting Sergeant Blair Corlet said the owner was on holiday.
A family member discovered the burglary while checking the property on Sunday and finding a door open.
It is not yet known how much was stolen.
Investigations are continuing.
Acting Sgt Corlet urged Oamaru residents to be vigilant, keep their homes and cars as secure as possible and keep valuables out of sight.
It was becoming more common for thieves to use social media to plan their crimes, if they knew a home was going to be unattended, he said.
He asked people to be careful about discussing their holiday plans on Facebook and other forms of social media.
He also suggested keeping neighbours aware of holiday plans, and giving them information on how to get in contact if they spotted suspicious activity.
''It's good to have someone checking [your] property if [you] are away on holiday,'' he said.
