Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher uses a plumber's plunger to break a toilet-paper ribbon yesterday to open the new public toilets at the Friendly Bay Steampunk playground.
Even Mr Kircher admitted the official ceremony was ''a bit tongue in cheek''.
However, at the same time it was important to mark the opening of the toilets which had been requested by people for some time in the Friendly Bay area.
A temporary unisex toilet had been built in a building on Waterfront Rd, but was not suitable in the long term and a lot of people did not know it was there.
It will be closed.
The new toilets have two unisex and disabled cubicles.
A shower had been added to the eastern end so that people swimming at Friendly Bay could wash off salt and sand.
The toilets, which were built by Banks Building Services, came in under budget at $110,000.
