Teens charged after crashing stolen car

A joyride in a stolen car came to an end when a group of teenagers crashed in North Otago on Sunday.

A 15-year-old girl and two boys aged 14 and 13, all of Canterbury, allegedly stole a 2016 Toyota Aqua car in Christchurch at the weekend.

The group drove off in the car and crashed the vehicle on State Highway 1, near Shag Point, at 8am on Sunday. All escaped without injury.

Sergeant Blair Wilkinson, of Oamaru, said it appeared the driver had fallen asleep at the wheel and crashed down a bank.

The group were all arrested and held in custody, Sgt Wilkinson said.

The 14-year-old was charged with unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, possession of instruments for conversion of a motor vehicle, and careless driving. The 15-year-old girl was charged with unlawfully taking a motor vehicle and breaching bail conditions.

Both appeared in the Timaru Youth Court yesterday.

The 13-year-old was referred to Youth Aid in Christchurch for unlawfully getting into a motor vehicle, Sgt Wilkinson said.
