The profile of one of Oamaru's biggest tourist attractions had a major boost yesterday when 40 Australian travel agents and representatives from a tour bus company visited the historic precinct.

Five business development managers and 36 agents from the Grand Pacific Tours tour bus company spent about two hours visiting the area with volunteers from the Oamaru Whitestone Civic Trust and Victorian Town at Work.

Trust chairman Phil Hope described the visit as "massive for the historic precinct".

"Oamaru will always have difficulty attracting people here. Anyone who will sell for us is the most economical way to spread our message," he said.

One of the tour company's business managers, Ruth Mains, said those on the tour were from all over Australia.

They arrived in Christchurch at the weekend, had visited Methven, Twizel and Oamaru and would spend time in Dunedin, Te Anau and Queenstown.

"Part of it is to show what has happened in Christchurch (the earthquakes) was only a small part of the South Island," Ms Mains said.

Many of the agents were probably not aware of what Oamaru had to offer, but would now know what was there, she said.
