Trial ‘worthwhile’, but foodbank hours not being extended

A trial to extend the Oamaru Churches Foodbank’s opening hours was "well worthwhile", but there has not been enough demand to continue opening on Tuesday nights, manager Bernard Wilkinson says.

Over the past two months, the foodbank has trialled opening on Tuesday nights, from 5pm to 6.30pm, as well as its normal hours of 10am to noon on Fridays.

When the trial started, Mr Wilkinson said the foodbank was aware people who were working could find it difficult to get to the France St facility during its normal hours. He wanted to make sure everyone was able to access help if they needed it.

"We felt there could be people who are working, yet need a bit of assistance," Mr Wilkinson said.

"These [Tuesday night] hours were selected because we felt they might suit people on their way home after work."

However, "very few" people had used the service on a Tuesday night over the past two months. On average, about two people had visited for assistance each night, but it had varied from one to five, he said.

It had been a "well worthwhile" trial, but July 26 would be the last Tuesday night opening for the foodbank, Mr Wilkinson said.

From August, it would revert to its normal hours of 10am to noon on Fridays.

Overall demand at the foodbank had been "moderate" in recent months. It had the stocks to cope with any increase in demand, due to the generosity of the Waitaki community, he said.

When people visited the foodbank, they were given a list of items available at the foodbank, selected what they needed, and informed staff how many people they needed to feed in their household.

While some other foodbanks gave out pre-packed packages, "we think we’re better to give people the things they need", Mr Wilkinson said.
