A truck and trailer unit has gone off the road, near Shag Point Rd in North Otago putting SH1 down to one lane.
It happened about 5:40am on State Highway One near Shag Point Rd.
Police and the Fire Service are there and have managed to get the driver - who has minor injuries - out.
Police said the 61-year-old man was taken to Dunedin Hospital.
The road is expected to be fully closed at some point this afternoon, to enable the truck to be removed from the scene, police said.
A police spokeswoman says the truck and trailer unit has gone some distance off the road up a hill towards a tree.
She said the road is not blocked.
Power was out for 10 minutes but is now back on.
