Visitors leaving waste outside car park

The mess at the public car park at the end of the Moeraki boulders public access road was appalling, local farmer and Waihemo Community Board member Ken Wheeler said yesterday

Part of Mr Wheeler's farm borders the access road to the Moeraki boulders.

The car park was used by large numbers of visitors who frequently used the grass surrounding the car park as a toilet, he said.

Since the Department of Conservation toilets were removed from the Moeraki boulders public car park several years ago, an unsightly mess of faeces and toilet paper could often be seen in the bushes around the car park, he said.

Three hundred thousand people are estimated to visit the Moeraki boulders each year.

While a considerable number used the Moeraki Boulders cafe private road and car park, many others used the public road, Mr Wheeler said.

There are toilets at the Moeraki boulders cafe that are intended for the use of cafe patrons only.

The number of vehicles using the public car park had increased since the access road from State Highway 1 was sealed, he said.

The toilets that were previously at Moeraki needed holding tanks to function properly, Mr Wheeler said.

Instead of installing holding tanks, Doc had moved them to the Catlins.

The nearest public toilets to the Moeraki boulders on State Highway 1 are several kilometres away, at Hampden and Palmerston.

There are also public toilets on Haven St, near the Moeraki port.
