Works sold at art show

Budding artists' work is in demand - a bonus for young people involved in an exhibition being staged in Oamaru as part of Youth Week.

The exhibition, in which the works were not intended to be for sale, has generated interest from art lovers, some of whom want to buy pieces.

One young artist to benefit, Jesse Geary (15), in year 11 at Waitaki Boys High School, has sold at least one piece.

He has been interested in art all his life and wants to carry that through into tertiary studies at an art school.

Exhibition organiser, Waitaki District Council community development adviser Louise Day, said inquiries had been received about buying other pieces in the show.

"People have been so amazed at the quality of work, they want to buy some," she said.

The show has its last day today at the Down Town Art Gallery.
