Elan (60), of Jacks Pt, told the Queenstown Times his acrylics on canvas paintings had a strong Asian influence and were intended to "reflect the paradox and boldness of the human search for meaning in a benign indifference to the universe".
The five works by the artist were from his Japanese series, which used the colours black, white and red. Paintings from his Chinese series used green, gold and black with hints of red.
New York-born Elan said he was a public speaker and corporate coach for 30 years and sought to "inspire people with themselves" rather than simply motivate them. However, his 40th birthday in 1990 was when he made his commitment to being an artist.
• Latest works by Bannockburn artist Alan Waters will be exhibited in the contemporary art gallery in the Mountaineer building, from March 3 to 31.
