RNZAF pilots practised formation flying in CT-4/E Airtrainers above Lake Wanaka yesterday.

The pilots are among a group of more than 20 taking part in RNZAF Operation Wiseowl, which will end at Wanaka Airport tomorrow after an intense week of training.

The operation, which involves more than 100 RNZAF personnel, will conclude with an open day at Wanaka Airfield, from 10.30am to 2.30pm, and a formation flying demonstration.

It will include performances by the RNZAF Red Checkers aerobatics team and flyovers from several vintage and restored aircraft, housed at Wanaka Airport.

Airport operations manager Ralph Fegan said as well as the tourist attractions based at the airfield, commercial operators would open their hangars to the public.

Squadron Leader Bill Dewar said the RNZAF camp would give people a chance to see what field living was like for Defence personnel.

A photographic feature of RNZAF Operation Wiseowl will be published in the Otago Daily Times tomorrow.
