Anomaly set to be fixed

Confusion about parking times in Wanaka's Helwick St should be a thing of the past within a matter of weeks, Queenstown Lakes District Council Wanaka service centre manager Barbara East confirmed this week.

Some retailers in lower Helwick St have been questioning why signs there impose a 30-minute restriction between Mondays and Saturdays, while other signs one block up the street impose the same parking restriction seven days a week.

Wanaka Sports owner Mark Sanders said this week it meant people could legally park all day on lower Helwick St on Sunday, preventing a quick turnover of carparks.

He thought the anomoly had existed for several years but he had not noticed the differences until about two months ago.

Ms East said there had been a "historical oversight", which meant the lower Helwick St signs were not changed when the seven-day parking restriction came into effect for the whole street some time ago.

New signs had been ordered and would arrive in a few weeks time.

The public would be given plenty of notice "and a week or two of leeway before we crack down", Ms East said.

Mr Sanders said it was "awesome" new signs were coming and something was finally happening to resolve the confusion.

Ms East said other changes to waterfront parking would also be brought in soon, which may cause some initial confusion. The public would be given time to adjust to those changes as well.

They affect the sealed carparks along the Ardmore St lake front between Dungarvon St and the Log Cabin, which will all become P120.

Several all-day parks would be removed, affecting people who parked there and walked to work, Ms East said
