Queenstown still has a long way to go in cutting back on binge drinking, according to the police's departing alcohol officer.

Sergeant Keith Newell has been the resort's alcohol harm reduction officer for five years and is now returning to standard police work.

He will miss the role, but said many would not believe what he had seen in it, and said attitudes to alcohol and binge drinking had to change.

With the government looking to review the sale of alcohol, he said he would be interested in seeing how things developed in the resort over the next few years.

"The next couple of years will be interesting."

He is looking forward to his next challenge, back on the beat.

"I'll be upping the ante and looking forward to getting among the public and putting to use what I've learned in liquor licensing on the street.

"We're always busy, there's something always happening and I'm looking forward to it."

He said he would miss working with partner agencies, such as Lakes Environmental and family violence agency Jigsaw.

Sergeant Linda Stevens will be the new alcohol harm reduction officer. She has more than 20 years' experience in the police force. Although her new role would be challenging, Sgt Newell said Sgt Stevens was more than capable.

"She comes in with a wealth of experience. I've worked with her in Dunedin."

Senior Sergeant John Fookes said he was pleased with the job Sgt Newell had done for the past five years.
