The series of seasonal job profiles continues throughout the ski season. This week Sarah Hikuroa from Whangarei in the North Island talks about her job as rental assistant at the Remarkables skifield, where she is working for her second season.

Queenstown Times: Why did you choose this job?
Sarah Hikuroa: I was looking for something completely different from the previous lifestyle I was leading, and found it working in the snow on top of a mountain range. Where I am from we are surrounded by beaches, subtropical weather and rolling green hills, but I needed a change.

QT: Why did you choose to come back for a second season?
SH: The lifestyle made me come back. How many people can go snowboarding in their lunchtime, and meet people from all over the world?

QT: Which job did you do before you took this job?
SH: I have a degree in art and design, and I have worked in all sorts of jobs from being an insurance consultant to working in an engineering company. This industry fits me just right.

QT: What is the best thing about your job?
SH: The amazing view, the awesome people I work with, meeting new people, learning new skills, the NZSki functions and events they set up for staff, snowboarding in your breaks - and the fact that management are open to suggestions for future developments.

QT: What challenges come with the job?
SH: Adjusting to the climate, which can change overnight. Dealing with crowds of people.

QT: What skills are needed to do your job?
SH: None. You get on-the-job training and qualifications throughout the season.

QT: Who would your job appeal to?
SH: Anyone who loves the alpine lifestyle, is keen on a change, ready to have loads of fun and wants to learn.

QT: What is your best advice to people who move to Queenstown for seasonal work?
SH: Sort your accommodation before you arrive in Queenstown, and be ready for an awesome time. Pack WARM clothes.

QT: What has been your most amusing on-the-job experience so far this season?
SH: The most interesting and funny experiences have been meeting all the different people from all walks of life, ranging from some who have never seen snow before, to the people who have had massive outings the night before.
