Kiwi Birdlife Park's newest resident, Hakurangi - formerly named Mr McMurdo - was named and blessed by Willie Solomon this morning.

Park manager Nicole Kunzmann said staff had asked Mr Solomon to come up with some traditional names.

''He asked us a bit more about the character of this bird.

''We said that he seemed to be quite bold and adventurous as he would out exploring his enclosure from the first night. Some birds take a few days to settle in before they start exploring.

''He also seemed to be a pretty relaxed character ... he started eating almost straight away.

''Other birds usually take much longer than that - we've had one kiwi arrive that needed to be assist-fed after a few days as they simply won't eat.''

Ms Kunzmann said of the suggestions Mr Solomon sent through, staff decided Hakurangi was the most fitting.

It was hoped Hakurangi would go on to be a successful contributor to the nationwide kiwi breeding programme and would be released into the wild in a few years.

He would be introduced to his ''future partner'' Hoa Tapui in the next few weeks.
