A 9-year-old Chinese boy was taken by St John Queenstown ambulance to the Lakes District Hospital for a precautionary assessment yesterday after  three vehicles were involved in a crash at Arrow Junction.

The boy was expected to be discharged last night.

Sergeant Keith Newell, of Queenstown, said charges were likely after it appeared a rented Hyundai people carrier, carrying five members of a Chinese family and driven by a Chinese man aged in his 30s, attempted a right turn at the State Highway 6 intersection about 3.40pm.

A utility vehicle carrying two people and belonging to a Gibbston tourism operator hit the Hyundai, which forced its rear off the road, and clipped the front of a car travelling behind the ute and occupied by an Australian couple.

"It's a reminder for overseas tourists to make themselves familiar with New Zealand road rules," Sgt Newell said.
