The $1.4 million widening of McChesney bridge near Arthur's Point is on target for completion in June, Queenstown Lakes District Council project manager Lane Vermaas says.

The operation started last December, after the Arthur's Point Tavern was demolished.

On Monday, McChesney bridge will be closed completely twice, each time for half an hour, as construction staff work close to the abutment.

Mr Vermaas said the closures would occur after the peak traffic hour of 9am.

The bridge redevelopment is stage three of the council's Gorge Rd upgrade. Stages one and two included building an improved walkway-cycleway alongside Gorge Rd and roadworks at the single-lane Edith Cavell bridge.

The upgrades were designed to improve cyclist and motorist safety in what has become a hazardous area.

He said while the works were expected to be finished by June, a temporary chip seal would have to be laid until September, when it would be warm enough for the final asphalt layer.

Two bus stops are being built on either side of Gorge Rd, near the site of the former tavern.

Mr Vermaas said the work was progressing according to budget.
