The two-theatre 3-D cinema complex at Wanaka's BaseCamp facility is on track for a September 9 opening, to coincide with the first of the Rugby World Cup games.
Boutique 40-seat and 20-seat cinemas are being built in a lower level at the BaseCamp building on Cardrona Valley Rd.
The building, owned by Willowridge Developments, also contains an indoor climbing facility and a restaurant.
Willowridge director Allan Dippie told the Otago Daily Times the cinemas were in the fitting-out stage, with the digital projection equipment and sound system being installed this week. Work would then begin on the decor.
"These are two super-luxury cinemas complete with all-leather electric reclining seats and sumptuous armchairs, all in very glamorous surroundings," Mr Dippie said.
"[The cinema complex] will feature everything from the latest new release films to art-house movies and festival events to classics from bygone times to children's entertainment."
The restaurant and cinema complex would be run as one venue for the duration of the World Cup.
"We should be able to screen the World Cup matches in 3-D in the main cinema, which will be amazing on the big screen."
Mr Dippie said the introduction of the cinemas would mean BaseCamp would become a "total hospitality and entertainment destination".
"The Clip 'n' Climb and cinema matinee programme will be fabulous for young people, whilst the Lone Star [restaurant] will offer a dine and cinema option at night."
