Strongmen and jesters were among those who rolled up for the gala closing night of Gay Ski Week Queenstown.

Hundreds turned out for the circus-themed extravaganza at the Queenstown Memorial Centre on Saturday night.

Festival organiser Sally Whitewoods said the dance music party capped a stellar week in the resort, with up to 1300 people attending overall.

''There's been an increase in new guests and so many more females,'' Mrs Whitewoods said.

''We've been advertising in female magazines and obviously people know we run it now, so there's been a knock-on effect.

''Even the guys say how nice it is to have a mix. Everyone has a great time.''

Queenstowner Mrs Whitewoods and civil union partner Mandy Whitewoods saved the event from financial collapse in 2012 and run it together.

It is now in its 12th year. Mrs Whitewoods believes the proportion of females increased from about 15% last year to a quarter.

Mrs Whitewoods said about 350 turned out for the ''Belvedere presents Oh What a Circus'' closing night.

''It went amazingly,'' she said, ''so colourful and the costumes were just brilliant - jesters, lions and lots of clowns.''
