Lake Wanaka swimmers are treading water on a proposal to set aside a specific area for training purposes to improve safety for different groups of water-users.
Queenstown Lakes District Council harbourmaster Marty Black said he had met a group of swimmers who were pushing for a boat-free lane on the lake to improve safety.
A report is scheduled to be presented to the Wanaka Community Board at a meeting later this month, Mr Black said.
A trial period would be suggested for a swimming lane, which was proposed to extend along the lake shoreline near where the Wanaka showgrounds were located.
The swimming area, from which jet-boats and jet-skis would be prohibited, is proposed to run from the McDougall St intersection and down to where an often photographed lake-bound willow tree was located, Mr Black said.
"We're just wanting to try and make things safer for everyone on the water," he said.
The proposed swimming lane would be marked with buoys and signs advising boats to steer clear, Mr Black said.
