Contestants complete challenge today

Two Queenstown women racing from Auckland to Queenstown on $10 are well on the way to Queenstown, after arriving in Christchurch last night from Picton.

Michelle Stalker and Sarah Hayes, competing as The Perky Nanas, are one of 28 teams from across New Zealand in the 2008 Accor $10 Challenge for Cure Kids.

Sponsored by Harcourts Queenstown and Berry and Co, the pair left Auckland on Wednesday after successfully "pimping a ride" from Harcourts realtor Trevor Hyland, from the Whangaparoa office, who drove them from Auckland to Hamilton.

Yesterday, the pair started the day with a hip-hop class, before boarding the Inter Islander to travel from Wellington to Picton.

Cure Kids fund-raising manager Thelma French said while on board the ferry, the teams were divided into groups to prepare "an item" which they performed in Christchurch last night.

At Picton they were loaded on to the Transcoastal train, which delivered them to Kaikoura - "where the fun began".

Mrs French said the teams then had to rely on motorists to pick them up and carry them to Christchurch and while the Queenstown pair appeared to have been successful with getting a ride, many others weren't so lucky.

"Quite a few teams have had to be picked up because they didn't get a ride. A lot of them got stuck in Kaikoura and we had to cut it off at 4.55pm, so they're in the "Shame Vehicle" (the sweep car)."

Teams were also required to fundraise on their way to Queenstown, with proceeds going towards funding research into life-threatening conditions affecting children.

Teams are expected to begin arriving at the Novotel Lakeside hotel in Queenstown from about 1.30pm, Mrs French said.
