Coronet closing early

Coronet Peak has been forced to revise its closing day for the second time this season as warmer spring temperatures bite into ski and snowboarding operations.

The skifield has decided to close tomorrow, after a previous announcement last week it was extending its season until Sunday, October 10.

NZ Ski Ltd chief executive James Coddington said the decision to close mid-week followed a weekend of warm spring weather, which left snow "fading" on the slopes.

"Sadly the time has come to shut up shop for the season," he said.

Given the skifield's existing visitor numbers, current snow base and upcoming weather forecast, the decision to close was the "most logical", Mr Coddington said.

Present snow conditions should hold up well for the remaining two days, he said.

Across the Wakatipu at the Remarkables, the Queenstown ski season will continue at the Remarkables, which reports good spring skiing conditions on a 180cm snow base.

The field is scheduled to close on Sunday.
