Remarkable Theatre players (from left) David Cantwell, Phena Byrne, Rebecca Curran, David Oakley, Andrew Edgar and Jules Molloy rehearse a scene from The Female of the Species , to be staged in the Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall on September 27-29.

The play is one of equal opportunities - it hilariously offends everyone, its producers from Remarkable Theatre say.

Cast and crew in the Queenstown amateur dramatic society found a firm favourite when they first performed the satire by Melbourne playwright  oanna Murray-Smith as one of their play readings last year, director Jo Blick said.

"It's just funny and appeals to everyone and there's some beautiful lines. It all fits in one room, so it's nice and easy and we can really focus on doing one set really well."

Based on a real-life episode which involved author Germaine Greer briefly held at gunpoint in her own home by a student in 2000, The Female of the Species stars Phena Byrne as Margot Mason, a bestselling celebrity feminist writer stuck with writer's block and a looming deadline.

Rebecca Curran makes her Queenstown theatrical debut by playing student Molly Rivers who wants revenge on Mason for a personal tragedy and holds her hostage.

Jules Molloy as matrimonially depressed Tess, David Oakley as Tess' husband Bryan, Andrew Edgar as taxi driver Frank and David Cantwell as Mason's
flamboyant publicist Theo complete the cast.

Tickets cost $29 per person and are for sale in the Lakes District Museum, Arrowtown and i-Site Queenstown Visitor Centre.
