Expansion likely to get nod

A planned extension to the Wanaka Yacht and Power Boat Club building is expected to be approved by the Wanaka Community Board today.

The club wants to extend its rooms beside the Wanaka Marina, a proposal which was identified in the recently adopted Wanaka lakefront reserves management plan as a ''key implementation action''.

The club has around 160 members and has outgrown its rooms, which are also used by other community groups.

In 1998, the club obtained a Queenstown Lakes District Council-issued lease for its rooms and an area of the groyne - set to lapse on October 1, 2017 - covering 1193sq m.

Council property manager Joanne Conroy has recommended that lease be surrendered in favour of a bigger 1272sqm lease to allow for the building extension, with a longer term of 33 years to reflect the investment being made.

The club wants to renew its licence to occupy areas for boat parking and Ms Conroy has recommended granting a three-year licence, with two renewals, over 2588sq m of reserve next to the clubrooms for that purpose.

To accommodate the building extension, the club's existing boat parking area would be reduced slightly from its previous three-year licence over 2671sq m of neighbouring reserve.

That licence was issued by the council in June 2011 and has not been renewed due to the adoption of the lakefront reserves management plan.

The community board will consider Ms Conroy's recommendation at its meeting in Wanaka this morning.
