Frisbee golf affecting gardens

Frisbee golf has been identified as an activity which impacts heavily on trees and soil in the Queenstown Gardens.

An arborist's report outlined recommendations for sustainable and healthy trees in the park. The Queenstown Lakes District Council announced this week it wanted feedback from the public on the long-term plan.

Council parks manager Gordon Bailey said "some hard thinking" needed to be done on how frisbee golf activity was managed.

"It's true to say that without the trees we would have no gardens, but we also have to weigh that up against what people use the gardens for.

"It's a place for recreation as well as contemplation and we have to find a balance between protecting the trees and allowing people to take part in activities they enjoy."

Arborist Frank Buddingh looked at the age, health and mix of trees planted in the gardens and its surrounding shelter belts.

Copies of the Queenstown Gardens sustainable and healthy tree plan are available from council offices and libraries and on the council website.

Feedback will close on March 30 at 4pm.
