There are 14 seats and 26 picnic tables along the entire trail, and seats are located about every 500m, so the volunteers had quite a job on their hands.
"We need to seal them every year to protect them from the hot and sunny conditions here.
"We'd like them to last for a very long time," organiser Susan Stevens said.
Four volunteers from Veolia took part in the day-long exercise and more than eight picnic tables at Rum Currie's Hut were completed.
Veolia is expected to send another group of volunteers before Christmas to finish resealing the rest of the furniture along the trail.
Veolia Water (previously United Water) is in its fourth year contracted to the Queenstown Lakes District Council to operate and maintain the three waters network across the district.
Stuart Pile, of Veolia Water, said it wanted to contribute to the Gibbston River Trail because the track follows the Kawarau River and it felt the theme of water would tie in well with the volunteer arrangement.
"We are, of course, more than happy to contribute towards further volunteering days," he said.
