Hard-core cycling just par for the course

For the record, Australian golfer Daniel Bryant and his professional partner Marcus Cain failed to make the cut in the teams event at the New Zealand Open yesterday.

But the record also needs to show that this was through no lack of effort by Bryant's caddy, American Noah Zitzei.

Why?

Because to get to The Hills course, Noah didn't just jet in from overseas or drive for hours in a rental car.

No, that's way too easy.

Instead, he rode his pushbike to Arrowtown all the way from Mapua, near Nelson, a journey of several hundred kilometres which took him all of last week.

In that time he cycled over the Lewis Pass, Burkes Pass, the Lindis Pass and, oh yes, just for good measure, the Crown Range.

No, he's not crazy - just a seriously keen cyclist who wanted to soak up the beautiful New Zealand countryside at pedal pace during the day and then rest his weary bones each night in his tent.

It sounded like hard yakka, but Noah just laughed off the suggestion yesterday, although conceded it was not a challenge to suit any ''beginner''. He even had a little confession to make.

''I'm not gonna lie to you ... on the Crown Range ... I had to walk that a couple of times and I don't walk hills ever, so that's a little embarrassing.''

It is not the first time Noah has cycled to this part of the world.

In November, he and a friend from California set out from Auckland on their bikes and went ''all over'' New Zealand in the next two months, including treks to Dunedin and Queenstown.

''This is a great place for cycling,'' he smiled.

There is, however, one occupational hazard with this biking/camping lark, as he found on Thursday night in the Arrowtown camping ground.

''Oh man, it was terrible last night. There was some guy that was snoring so loud, I didn't sleep because of him.

"These two guys pulled up next to me and they're talking like, `I wish my tent had soundproofing'.

''I got out of my tent and started laughing and I said, `I'm moving', so I grabbed my tent and dragged it around the corner. And it's still there.''

As for Daniel (31) the father-of-two says he only got to meet Noah this week when he was allocated him as a caddy and found tales of his week-long cycling escapade ''interesting''.

''Well, yes, I can believe it actually, having spent a few days with him this week. I don't think I'd be doing it myself.''

Daniel, a 5 handicapper who describes himself as a keen golfer, earned his place in the field this week by winning a Michael Hill competition in Sydney through ''the luck of the draw''.

The prize included a trip for two to Queenstown (he brought his father Michael) including airfares and accommodation.

As an office-bound software worker, Daniel says to have a week off in Queenstown, playing golf has ''just been absolute heaven''.
