Antipodean Light (2012) is one of eight mixed media on paper, oil-on-canvas and acrylic-on-board paintings by Masterton artist Paul Martinson to feature in "Natural Light", his second solo exhibition in Milford Galleries Queenstown.
Before taking up painting as a full-time career in 1987, Martinson worked as a science technician for the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research.
He was commissioned by Te Papa Tongarewa to paint New Zealand's extinct birdlife in 2004, which resulted in Extinct Birds of New Zealand, published in 2006.
Martinson exhibited a series of new works, marking a significant change of direction in his painting and drawing, in 2007.
• "Natural Light" is held upstairs in the Church Lane gallery from November 17 to December 12.
• A total of 11 nationally significant artists are represented in the "Works on Paper" showcase downstairs, which runs between the same dates. The 26 paintings, screenprints and drawings include work by Martinson, Dick Frizzell, Stanley Palmer, Nigel Brown, Karl Maughan, Reuben Paterson, Neal Palmer, Gary Waldrom, Simon Edwards and Toni McKinnon.
