New zone for business, industry only

A plan change enabling Wanaka's new Industrial B Zone to come into effect was adopted by the Queenstown Lakes District Council at an extraordinary meeting in Queenstown yesterday.

The move means about 14.4ha of land between Gordon Rd and Frederick St, and those sites subdivided on the southern side of Frederick St, can be used for business and industry.

Residential and visitor accommodation would be prohibited in the new Industrial B zone - just the second prohibited activity in the Queenstown Lakes District Council's District Plan, Cr Lex Perkins said.

The other was the transplanting of wilding pines, he said.

He supported the move, which would stop any repeats of the situation in Glenda Dr in Queenstown, where residential accommodation had been included in an industrial zone.

Mayor Clive Geddes said there was a "clear message" the zone in Wanaka would be used for business and industrial activity only.

"It's yet another outcome of a process which took place eight years ago, which was the start of the Wanaka 2020 Structure Plan."

Plan Change 36 would be notified for public submissions by the end of this month and submissions were likely to close before Christmas.
