The touring exhibition, which comprises works from members of the National Association of New Zealand Quilters, was the result of a "quilt challenge" where the best quilters around the country were asked to submit entries illustrating the theme of "illumination", Mr Clarke said.
"The definition of this is the act of lighting up; giving spiritual or intellectual light to; shedding light or lustre upon decorating or making bright with light or colour."
The 20 best quilts are touring the country and some are for sale.
The exhibition opens at the museum tomorrow and runs until March 28.
