They won't be winning any races at speeds under 50kmh, but moped and scooter riders in today's second annual Upper Clutha Scooter Hooter motorcycle rally are quite content with taking their time.
''[The motorbikes] go faster than that but you don't want to get there too fast,'' rally organiser Paul van Klink said.
''It's about the journey rather than the destination.''
It is a journey that Mr van Klink hoped would not be hampered by bad weather. However, he expected up to 20 people from throughout Canterbury, Otago and Southland would still take part in the fledgling rally. Riders aged in their 30s through to their 70s were registered.
''It's just quite a fun thing to do with a whole mismatch of people. A lot of these bikes are buried away in the back of sheds and things, so it's quite fun to get them out.''
The inaugural rally last year attracted everything from 1950s mopeds to modern scooters, and Mr van Klink expected the same diverse mix this year.
He will be on his 1970 Suzuki AC50 Maverick which he restored from a ''rusty old bucket'' to like new again.
Registration begins at 10am on the lakefront opposite Pembroke Park, before a 10.30am departure.
