It might be Winter Festival time in Queenstown but the biggest party on Saturday night was down the Kawarau Gorge in the shadows of the Clyde dam.
And there was good reason for a knees-up in the little town of Clyde after a late intercept try saw its premier grade rugby team upset Wakatipu 23-20.
It was the first time Clyde had beaten Wakatipu since 1983 and looking at the two teams on paper, that losing streak should not have ended on Saturday.
Wakatipu is much better than its performance showed, with the team unable to adjust to the scrappy nature of the game.
However, if it bounces back with a good win this week against Alexandra the shock loss will not affect its position on the Central Otago points table.
Meanwhile, the logistical issues of trying to arrange a game of footy in the middle of winter proved too much for Arrowtown and Maniototo, with this keenly anticipated top-of-the-table clash called off at the last minute.
Maniototo had travelled more than two hours to Jack Reid Park, only to turn around and drive back home again after the ground was deemed unsafe for play.
Although this left fans disappointed, the frozen ground could have turned a routine tackle into a life-and-death situation if someone had hit their head on it.
With the game unlikely to be rescheduled, the next time these two teams meet could well be the grand final in a month's time.
