Wanaka Primary School staff and pupils are contemplating the move to a new $21.5 million premises with only one school term left before their scheduled relocation.

Wanaka Primary School board of trustees chairman Pete Bullen said construction at the new school site in Scurr Heights was "well ahead" of schedule.

Staff and pupils are set to move to the new premises from September 20, and classes set to begin on October 11, the first day of term four, he said.

Eight classrooms at the school had been completed, and another two rooms were scheduled for an inspection and sign-off next week, he said.

"Everything is looking really fantastic and we are all getting very excited about the move ahead," Mr Bullen said.

Landscape gardeners were busy planting more than 21,000 trees and shrubs, while asphalting and paving at the site was also "well under way".

Work has already been completed on tennis and netball courts, and the grassing of sports fields.

Equipment from two playgrounds had been relocated from the Wanaka Primary School site on Tenby St and contractors were working to finish the shift of equipment from the final playground, Mr Bullen said.

School pupils and staff members had held a couple of "field days" which had involved visits to the Scurr Heights site to inspect the new premises, he said.
