A search and rescue operation is under way for a mountaineer missing for three weeks.

Police were advised last night that Simon Bell  (33), of Wanaka,  set off to climb Mt Earnslaw, in Aspiring National Park, on January 13.

He was reported missing yesterday by his ex-partner and his car was found at Muddy Creek, not far from the start of the Mt Earnslaw track.

Senior Constable Chris Blackford, of Queenstown Police, said: "He has a tracker, phone and personal locator beacon with him.

"The beacon has not been activated and the phone has not ‘polled' since January 13."

‘Polling' happens when a phone attempts to connect to a cell phone tower.

Police are searching for Mr Bell today, and will travel into the area by helicopter to check huts on Mt Earnslaw..

Checks are also being performed with Canadian firm Spot, which operates the satellite personal tracker.

Police are concerned about Mr Bell's safety, and would like to hear from anyone who has been in the Mt Earnslaw area in the past few weeks who might have encountered him.

Mr Bell is 190cm tall, of light build and wears glasses.

Anyone with information should call Queenstown police on 03 441 1600.
